PILATES
The Pilates exercise method was first introduced in the early part of the 20th century by a young German dancer named Joseph Pilates. The Pilates method of exercise focuses on flexibility, breathing and muscle control. The exercises are almost always done on a the floor or on a mat and are similar to yoga in that you learn different sequences of movements that incorporate strength and breathing. It was not until recently that Pilates has become a mainstream alternative to other types of exercises.

Pilates is an excellent exercise if you are just getting started or you want focus on an exercise program that you can do without any specialized equipment. In the Pilates method you make slow controlled movements that avoid undue stress on your heart and lungs. You will find also that you get an excellent workout from only 20-30 minutes of doing Pilates.

As interest in Pilates has increased so have the variations in the regime. It is now possible for find classes at your local health club and there are a number of simple resistance devices (mostly based on springs) that you can use during your exercise to gain added benefit to your workout.
