| ACID REFLUX | ||||
|
||||
| Acid reflux is the term used to define the most common explanation for
heartburn - digestive juice refluxing (rising) into the esophagus. Digestive
juices are actually hydrochloric acid, a powerful acid that the body uses
to breakdown food before passing it through to the intestines. The stomach
is obviously designed to contain these acids, and is protected from their
effects. However, the esophagus does not share in this protection, and when
stomach acid refluxes into the esophagus it results in the symptoms of heartburn
- generally a warn, burning discomfort and a possible sour taste in the
mouth.
